Unique Nature Experience: To Germany's last Great Horseshoe Bat
On June 27, 2026, a day trip to the Bat House Hohenburg starts in Amberg. Here lives Germany's last maternity roost of the Great Horseshoe Bat – a discovery experience with guided city tour elements, rare fauna, and local history. Station manager Alexander Gnatz will professionally guide through the house; afterward, the group will briefly visit the feeding meadows. Around 12:00 noon, a joint lunch is planned.
History to Touch in the Bat House
In the historic building at Marktplatz 32 in Hohenburg, the group learns how consistent species conservation has preserved the colony of the Great Horseshoe Bat. Architectural details from the 16th century frame the exhibition – cultural enrichment and natural knowledge meet here.
Close Up to the Colony
With thorough explanations about the lifestyle of the horseshoe bats, the guide explains hunting areas, roost selection, and why the Lauterachtal offers ideal conditions. In early June, with a bit of luck, insights into births can be gained – documented through project work and webcam recordings from previous years.
Compact Excursion to Lauterachtal
After the tour, a short excursion to the feeding meadows follows. Here, the group experiences the semi-open landscape where the bats hunt insects. The focus is on Natura 2000 habitats and regional cultural land.
Conclusion
This tour combines nature experience, cultural heritage, and scientifically proven insights into species conservation. Ideal for the curious, families, and photographers. Spaces are limited – book now and see the Upper Palatinate with new eyes.
