Experience architecture from an upward perspective at the Air Museum
The special exhibition Perspectives by Neu-Ulmer photographer Günther Bayerl transforms the Gothic chapel of the Air Museum Amberg into a contemplative image space. In radically upward-looking ceiling views, architecture reveals itself as a rhythm of lines, vaults, and light – an intense art experience that combines the contemplation of works and aesthetic experience. In cooperation with the Diocesan Museum Regensburg, the exhibition presents a concentrated series that poetically condenses forms, spatial effects, and atmospheres.
Reading architecture: forms, construction, light
The photographs reduce spaces to their constructive basic structures: ribs, paneling, domes, and beams become perceptible in precise light painting. Symmetries create calmness, minimal asymmetries generate tension; this creates an exhibition atmosphere that sharpens vision and reinterprets architecture.
Artist Profile: Günther Bayerl
Bayerl studied Digital Media at the Ulm University and Art Photography at the University of Tasmania. Since 2011, he has been working as a freelancer with a focus on architectural and corporate photography. Awards such as the ITB Book Award 2018 (World Heritage – Germany's Living Past) and a shortlist nomination at the Sony World Photography Awards (Category Architecture) confirm the authority of his work.
Curating and cultural education
The curatorial concept focuses on the consistent upward perspective: series installation, uniform image formats, and subdued lighting support the contemplation of works. Visitors learn to read ornamental details, load-bearing structures, and spatial proportions – a valuable impetus for art historical understanding and urban perception.
Sensory impressions: material, color, space
Stone breathes in cool gray and sand tones, gilded ribs glisten, bright plaster surfaces reflect the incoming daylight. The image fields open imaginary domes; the gaze rises – seemingly weightlessly – to the vault. Thus, walking through the chapel becomes a silent journey through space.
Service: Visit to the Air Museum
The exhibition is located on the ground floor of the Air Museum. The building is situated in the medieval Engelsburg and, due to its architectural history, has no elevator; according to the museum, the building is not fully accessible. Regular opening hours vary seasonally; guided tours are available upon request. Information on admission prices and discounts can be found at the visitor information.
Conclusion
Perspectives promises concentrated visual poetry between architecture and perception: architecture as a silent play of line, surface, and light. Those who wish to sharpen their vision and expand their perception of their city should definitely visit this exhibition live.
