In the Wide Spectrum of Life: Photographic Journeys from Amberg to Rajasthan
The city gallery ALTE FEUERWACHE will showcase the photographic works of Nuremberg photographer Gerd Dollhopf in the summer and autumn of 2026. Between poetic street photography, travel impressions, and precise image composition, an art experience unfolds that ranges from the light of East Bavaria to the colors of Rajasthan. Admission to the city gallery is free; access is through the city museum.
Poetics of Images Between Document and Imagination
In this exhibition, a paint-oriented image conception and photography intertwine: rich color fields, fine grain structures, and graphical lines rhythmize the work observation. Dollhopf's motives oscillate between quiet everyday observations and intense portraits. Spaces open up through clear sight axes; the soft gallery light allows materials, surfaces, and textures to emerge distinctly.
From the City of Vils to the World: Themes, Places, Perspectives
The exhibition spans a bridge from urban scenes of Amberg through Eastern European travel cycles to India. Contrasts of color and shadow, the presence of bodies in urban space, and sensitive architectures condense into a panorama of human experiences. The curation emphasizes sequences and pairings, allowing groups of motifs to speak to one another in the space.
Art Historical Context and Biography
Gerd Dollhopf, born in 1963 in Amberg, works as a photo designer and lecturer. He traveled early to countries of the former Soviet Union, later creating extensive series and exhibition projects. Recently, he curated in Amberg the work of his father, painter and graphic artist Prof. Günter Dollhopf, and realized his own exhibitions, including those dialogically related to the partner city of Kharkiv. His photographic practice combines reportorial attention with compositional rigor.
Exhibition Atmosphere and Mediation
The city gallery presents contemporary visual art from East Bavaria on approximately 170 square meters. The exhibition design focuses on calm hanging, clear sight axes, and a readability that promotes contemplative observation. The regular opening hours of the house provide ample time for a deeper aesthetic experience.
